Imagine a gateway that not only welcomes millions to the sun-soaked shores of San Diego but also propels California’s economy into a more sustainable era. That’s the story of the New Terminal 1 (New T1) at San Diego International Airport (SAN)—a transformative $3.8 billion project that’s redefining air travel for the region and beyond. As Savala Equipment Company, we’ve been proud to contribute our expertise and machinery to this landmark endeavor, renting out top-tier equipment that powered critical phases of the build.
The Challenge: An Outdated Terminal in a Thriving City
It begins with a challenge: SAN’s original Terminal 1, built in 1967 for just 2.5 million passengers a year, was bursting at the seams by the 2020s, handling over 12 million annually with projections climbing through 2035. Congestion, outdated facilities, and limited gates were hindering San Diego’s growth as a hub for tourism, business, and international connections. Enter the New T1—a 1.2 million-square-foot marvel designed to expand from 14 to 30 gates, easing bottlenecks and elevating the passenger experience. Construction kicked off in November 2021, with Phase 1 welcoming its first arrivals in August 2025 and fully operational soon after. Phase 2, slated for early 2028, will add 11 more gates, plus upgrades like customer lounges, a children’s play area, and enhanced infrastructure.
Savala Equipment’s Contribution on the Ground
Savala Equipment Rentals partnered with construction teams early in the project, supplying reliable, high-performance equipment essential to airport construction. Our excavators, loaders, mini excavators, and skip loaders supported demolition of the existing terminal, extensive site grading, underground utilities, roadway construction, and bridge preparation—all while airport operations continued around the clock.
Our ability to provide both union-operated and bare rental equipment allowed crews to remain flexible and responsive to demanding schedules, including day and night shifts. This adaptability helped teams meet tight deadlines in one of the region’s most complex construction environments.
A Legacy of Reliability and Regional Impact
Since 1978, Savala Equipment has supported Southern California’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. Our involvement in San Diego International Airport’s New Terminal 1 reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering dependable equipment, responsive service, and solutions that help build the region’s future.
As New T1 continues to take shape, it stands as a testament to what collaboration, innovation, and local expertise can achieve—creating a more efficient, sustainable gateway for travelers from California and beyond.
