In late December 2025 and continuing into January 2026, Southern California was battered by relentless torrential rains that triggered widespread flooding, mudslides, and debris flows. State Route 138 (SR-138), a vital highway connecting the High Desert, San Bernardino Mountains, and communities near Wrightwood and the Cajon Pass, suffered severe damage. Sections of the roadway washed out, were buried under mud and debris, and experienced partial collapses, forcing full closures and disrupting daily commutes as well as emergency access.
Caltrans swiftly launched an emergency repair project — including a $2.8 million initiative near Crestline — to address the storm damage through debris removal, embankment stabilization, drainage and culvert repairs, shoulder reconstruction, and roadway resurfacing. The work extended well into January 2026 as crews battled ongoing wet conditions to reopen the highway and prevent further hazards. Heavy machinery was essential for clearing massive amounts of mud, rock, and debris while rebuilding stable roadbeds under tight deadlines.
